Chamomile Tea Benefits

Tea with chamomile flowers
Chamomile tea is so good for you.

Chamomile Tea Benefits

  1. Improves sleep
  2. Better digestion
  3. Protection from cancer

Chamomile tea is one of the most popular herbal teas out there. You might be pleasantly surprised to know that chamomile comes with a wide range of useful properties.

This herbal tea originates from daisy-like flowers. It is frequently used in alternative medicine to help people overcome many health conditions.

Chamomile tea is full of antioxidants - which can decrease a lot of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Also, it is a well-known remedy for those who have problems with sleep and digestion.

Improve your sleep with chamomile

Chamomile tea has a particular antioxidant called apigenin. This antioxidant binds to the receptors in your brain that regulate sleep. This will help to decrease the chance of having a sleeping disorder or chronic insomnia.

Better digestion

Proper digestion is vital for health. Chamomile can help to reduce some of the most common gastrointestinal conditions.

Some studies show that chamomile could help with diarrhea in mice, and other studies revealed that chamomile is useful for decreasing acidity in the stomach and preventing stomach ulcers.

Protect yourself from cancer

Cancer-fighting antioxidants have been found in chamomile tea. These antioxidants have been connected with a lower frequency of certain sorts of cancer. As was mentioned above, chamomile contains the antioxidant apigenin.

In test tube studies, apigenin has been found to fight against cancer cells - particularly those of the breast, stomach related tract, skin, prostate, and uterus.

Conclusion

It is always better to take preventive measures instead of facing some the common obstacles of health when you already have disease. Chamomile tea is a tasty way to improve your future health condition.

Of course, it does not mean you should drink 5 or 10 cups of chamomile tea every day to stay healthy. 1 or 2 cups of chamomile tea can be a good substitute for coffee or black tea. Variety is important for good health.

How many carbs does the average person eat a day?

Pasta in a bowl
The average person consumes over 300 grams of carbs per day.

We couldn't find any reliable answers to this question, so our keto expert JP Wells set out to discover the real answer for himself.

How many carbs does the average person eat a day?

Three average western meals and a single soda add up to a whopping 305.1 grams of carbohydrates per day. The total daily caloric intake came to 3 036 calories. This closely resembles the average American diet.

This is how JP came to this shocking conclusion:

Most people don't realize how many carbohydrates they eat every day

Those of you who know me know that most of my writings have been centered on the Keto Diet. I have built a brand that is dedicated to helping people achieve their weight loss goals by sharing my knowledge and experiences regarding fitness and nutrition.

Obviously it takes up a great deal of my life. I love sitting down and talking to people about what I’m doing. I have found that the longer I do this, the more organic conversations seem to happen with people that have no idea about what the Keto Diet really is. I also have conversations with people that really have a need and a desire to live a healthier life... but just feel stuck.

These are the people that I feel absolutely blessed to talk to and share my passion with. Each conversation that I have is uniquely different. Over time, though, I tend to notice a few trends in these conversations.

Many people think that they eat fewer carbohydrates than they actually do

There are many common misconceptions or beliefs among most people when they first begin to learn about a low carb-based diet. One of the most common misconceptions that I see is how many carbohydrates people believe they are eating vs. how many they are actually eating once they sit down and really take stock of it all.

The same goes for calories, too; but that’s a topic for another day.

My investigation into the truth behind average carbohydrate intake

I decided that it would be helpful to track an average, everyday person throughout the day and count the carbs in what they eat on a perfectly normal day.

Before I get into this, I want to start by saying that this will obviously change drastically depending on where you live- and what sort of lifestyle you are used too.

One person’s 'average' is most likely another person’s 'bizarre'. That was the first thought that came to my mind when we discussed the idea of 'the average carbohydrate intake'. I'll assume that we mean 'most popular in the western world', although that does not make it 'average' by any means.

I found my perfect test subject

That being said, I decided to track one of my roommates on a typical day. He is an American male in his early 30’s. He is active, but does not follow a regular fitness or nutrition routine. He works a skilled trade's job on a construction site. He is not grossly overweight nor is he in extremely good shape (don't tell him that).

All of these facts seemed fairly 'average' to me, who I felt made him a perfect candidate.

The only thing out of the ordinary from the majority of people is the fact that he works 12 hour days for 7 days a week and only receives 1 day off every other weekend - meaning that he does not have as much time to shop for groceries or cook like the average person does.

The one-man, one-day observational study about average carbohydrate intake

You will soon realize that what he ate on this particular day is very similar to what most of us eat on the majority of our days. His diet did not seem out of the ordinary - it certainly wasn't for him.

Breakfast

The day starts bright and early. We're up at 5:30 and out of the door within 10 minutes to be at work at 6:00 am.

We are currently living on an island in the Caribbean, so options for any food on the way to work are virtually non-existent at this time of the morning. When we get to work, someone makes a pot of coffee. He always has a cup of coffee, first thing, while we sit through the morning's safety meeting.

Depending on how you take your coffee, this can be a potentially huge source of carbs from sugar.

I always use the MyFitnessPal app from Under Armor to track nutritional totals, but there are a ton of options out there to choose from. Check out my article Top 5 Keto Apps of 2020 to discover a few other great options.

I asked my roommate how he took his coffee. He does not use any cream or sweetener. This makes his morning cup of coffee almost non-existent on the macro-nutrient (nutrients that can turn into fat) scales. In fact for our purposes his cup of coffee records absolutely 0 grams of carbs.

One cup of coffee - zero carbs and 0 calories so far

After the meeting someone in the office volunteers to go get the entire crew breakfast. They say they are running to Wendy’s and begin taking orders. My roommate decides that he is hungry and so he orders a sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich.

We all know that fast food is not the healthiest choice for us. This is about the average person like you and me. Sometimes in everyday life, time and convenience trump health and nutrition. I felt that this was a really appropriate meal for the purposes of this article.

According to my app one 'Artisan Sausage Egg Sandwich' contains 500 calories with a whopping 31 grams of carbs! Pretty much all of these carbs are contained in the bun of the sandwich and can be easily avoided by simply removing the bun if you are trying to follow a low carbohydrate lifestyle. But for the sake of what we are looking at, we are not doing that today. This brings our current total for the day to 31 grams of carbs.

One sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich - 31 grams of carbs and 500 calories so far

Lunch

The day went on like a typical day. Except for a couple cigarette breaks, my roommate did not stop working all morning till lunch time.

He said that he had not had time to cook anything for lunches lately, so he would be ordering out to eat for lunch as well.

Everyone got together and decided that they would collectively order from a little local sandwich shop not far from the job site. He ended up deciding on a Cuban sandwich with a Dr. Pepper.

According to my app, this sandwich contains 696 calories and 35.1 grams of carbs. The soda contained an additional 250 calories with 66 grams of carbs.

This brought the total to 946 calories and 101.1 grams of carbs just for this one meal!

If you add in the 500 calories and 31 grams of carbs from breakfast, this brings our daily total to 1,446 calories and 132.1 grams of carbs.

Cuban sandwich and a Dr. Pepper - 132.1 grams of carbs and 1 446 calories so far

Dinner

We finished up with lunch and went back to work. Things continued as normal. We worked until 6:30 pm and finished another day of work. We were all tired and ready to unwind so we decided to go get dinner together at a local beach side restaurant just up the road from our apartment.

It was pasta special night so we sat down, ordered a round of drinks and began looking at the menu.

Pasta night at this particular restaurant is a valued favorite among our group. We all quickly decided on the Cajun Pasta with a side of garlic bread. Obviously with this being a small restaurant, it is hard to get an exact number for the macros so I went on my app and selected the most comparable thing.

According to the app, one bowl of creamy Cajun pasta has a staggering 1,310 calories with 115 grams of carbs. The garlic bread came to about 280 calories with 58 grams of carbs. This brings the daily total to 3,036 calories with 305.1 grams of carbs!

Cajun pasta and garlic bread - 305.1 grams of carbs and 3 036 calories for the day

Therefore an average day with 3 meals (breakfast sandwich, sandwich and soda, pasta and garlic bread) equates too many more carbohydrates and calories than the recommended 2000 calories per day.

Conclusion

So as you can see, carbohydrates and calories can sneak up on you real fast! This really speaks to the importance of meal prepping and portion control.

I’ve fallen victim to this as we all have for a long time. If you get complacent and just try to estimate things out in your head, you can easily think that you’re staying within your macros... but in reality you're blowing right past them.

You should never underestimate the importance of portion control along your fitness journey. That one act of consciously measuring out and preparing each individual meal for yourself is quite possibly the most important step to consistently achieve your goals.

No amount of exercise or effort can out work a bad diet. All of your effort and sacrifice can be completely undone by this one simple thing.

Success is nothing more than a series of small decisions made well over time. Learn to recognize those small moments in your life. Start to consciously make the right decisions that you know you need to make.

Gut bacteria diversity diet

Gut with bacteria
Improve your health now.

How to increase gut bacteria diversity

Do this every day for 30 days to improve your gut health:
  1. Wake up: Have one teaspoon of turmeric and one teaspoon of cinnamon
  2. Morning: Have three cups of green tea with honey
  3. Lunch: Have 5 different, raw fruit and vegetables
  4. Afternoon: Have three cups of rooibos tea with honey
  5. Dinner: Have at least one gut-healthy food: Brown rice, sweet potatoes, carrots or broccoli
  6. Night: Have one teaspoon of turmeric and one teaspoon of cinnamon
  7. Do this alongside your existing balanced diet

Once you have done this for 30 days, continue with your 5 fruit and vegetables along with gut-healthy dinners to maintain your newly acquired gut bacteria diversity. Good gut bacteria feed on plant fiber.

This does not replace your current diet. All of these things are done in addition to the foods that you already eat.

Gut diversity diet chart

Follow this diet chart to make it easy for you to remember what to do. Share it to social media, save it on your phone or print it out and stick it to your wall. Long press on the image or left click on it to enlarge it.

Diet chart for gut bacteria diversity
Follow these steps to improve gut bacteria diversity.

This should be done for 30 days. Go back to your normal eating plan (which must include 5 fruit and vegetables every day to maintain gut bacteria) afterwards.

Do these ingredients really improve gut diversity?

They definitely do improve your gut health - and I have the research to prove it.

Turmeric

People who took Turmeric tablets daily saw a 7% increase in gut bacteria.

Beneficial gut bacteria that increased were Clostridium, Bacteroides, Citrobacter, Cronobacter, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Klebsiella, Parabacteroides and Pseudomonas.

Bad bacteria that decreased were Blautia and Ruminococcus.

Cinnamon

This study investigated the prebiotic (good gut bacteria enhancing) effects of cinnamon. The study examined the effects of black pepper, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, oregano, rosemary and turmeric.

Cinnamon (along with black pepper, cayenne pepper, ginger, oregano and rosemary) increased beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus bacteria. All 7 of the examined spices inhibited negative Ruminococcus growth.

Cinnamon inhibited Fusobacterium and Clostridium bacteria.

The study notes that these spices displayed prebiotic activity by promoting good gut bacteria and antibiotic activity by inhibiting the overgrowth of bad gut bacteria.

Green tea

This study found that green tea revamped the gut microbiome (the ecosystem of bacteria in the gut) and the skin metabolome (metabolites and chemicals in the skin) in mice who were negatively affected from stress.

The test was done for 7 days. That means that it only took a week for green tea to have positive effects on beneficial gut bacteria.

In this study, green tea affected Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus bacteria. Green tea helped the skin to defend itself against stress caused by UV exposure.

The study participants (the scientists, not the mice) say that this gives us insight into the prebiotic effects of green tea.

Honey

This scientific review notes that oligosaccharides from honey provide a prebiotic for good gut bacteria. They help with lactobacilli and bifidobacteria growth and improve metabolic function.

They say that numerous studies prove the antimicrobial (kills microorganisms that cause disease) effects of honey.

Raw fruit and vegetables

Foods that improve good gut bacteria include fibrous food, nutrient dense food, fermented food, plant foods, vegetables, grains, beans, fruit, oatmeal, legumes, sauerkraut, cabbage, tempeh, soy, kimchi, miso, kefir, dandelion greens, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, asparagus, seaweed, artichoke, Mexican turnip, root vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, flax seeds, green leafy vegetables, spinach, lettuce, bananas, apples, garlic and gum Arabic (in no particular order).

That is a long list to memorize. Just know this: Raw fruit and vegetables introduce good gut bacteria into your system. The fiber form plant foods feed good gut bacteria.

All the probiotic medication in the world won't do you any good if your diet can't sustain these good gut bacteria.

That's why you need to continue eating 5 fresh fruit and vegetables every day after the gut bacteria diversity diet. They maintain healthy gut bacteria colonies.

Rooibos tea

This study was done to examine the microbial action of diabetic monkeys and non-diabetic monkeys - and then examine the effects of rooibos tea intervention. Rooibos tea significantly affected the bacteria in the gut.

Rooibos tea reduced firmicutes (characteristic of diabetes) and increased bacteroidetes (reduced diabetes). This correlated with improved blood glucose levels and other health bio-markers in the diabetic monkeys.

The beneficial bacteria species that were increased by rooibos tea include akkermansia muciniphila, bacteroides intestinalis, and desulfovibrio piger and bifidobacterium adolescentis.

The study notes that the gut bacterial action in the monkeys is very similar to that of humans.

Brown rice

The beneficial gut bacterium Lactobacillus was measured in mice that ate 10% rice bran (one of the biggest differentials between brown rice and white rice) for 28 days.

Lactobacillus colonization was increased, compared to mice that ate a normal diet.

The study concluded that rice bran consumption (like that in brown rice) is a promising dietary intervention against digestive diseases and beneficial gut bacteria induction.

Sweet potatoes

This study found that sweet potatoes have amazing prebiotic effects. They promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria called bifidobacterium genus.

They also stimulate short chain fatty acids and butyric acid (which is needed for good gut bacteria growth, bad gut bacteria suppression and overall gut health).

Carrots

This study found that regular carrot consumption reduced cholesterol, increased fecal bile and fat excretion and increased stool weight.

200 grams of carrots were eaten every day for a 3 week period.

They note that these effects suggest that carrots positively change your metabolism and your bacterial flora. These changes lasted for 3 weeks after the carrot treatment was stopped.

This clearly indicates that we need to continue to consume raw fruit and vegetables to maintain a healthy gut environment.

Broccoli

This study notes that cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage have compounds that gut bacteria need. The test found that cruciferous vegetables positively alter gut bacteria.

Conclusion

Now that you have read the research on how these ingredients positively change gut bacteria diversity, go back to the top of this article and use the diet chart that I created to improve your gut health.

It should only take 30 days to see remarkable changes in your gut. Stay Strong!

Disadvantages of a balanced diet

Banana, orange, apple and rose apple on a plate
Anticipate the drawbacks.

Why should we look at the disadvantage of a balanced diet?

If there weren't any disadvantages to a balanced diet, we'd all be following one already. The disadvantages are the reasons why we struggle to stick to a balanced diet.

If we can look at the disadvantages before we start a balanced diet, we can prepare for them so that they don't cause us to go back to unhealthy eating habits.

Disadvantages of a balanced diet

  1. There are too many different ideas of what a balanced diet should be
  2. The food that you enjoy the most probably doesn't have a place on the balanced diet
  3. There will be certain food groups that you won't enjoy on a balanced diet
  4. Not all food in a balanced diet is cheap or readily available
  5. A balanced diet takes time to yield health results

1. There are too many different ideas of what a balanced diet should be

A basic healthy diet should include all of the nutrients that your body needs and exclude the unhealthy foods that damage your health. This sounds very simple, until you find that people have different opinions about:
  • The nutrients that your body needs
  • The foods that damage your health
There are 7 different types of common, balanced diets. These include the Dietary Guidelines as per the World Health Organization, the Mediterranean Diet (which is often referred to as the world's healthiest diet), The South Beach Diet (for weight loss and heart health), the Vegan Balanced Diet, the Ketogenic Balanced Diet and the balanced diet that is centered on Intermittent Fasting.

One of the biggest disadvantages of following a balanced diet is the fact that there is so much conflicting health advice out there. Doctors can't agree on the best diet either.

Research can often add to the confusion as well. This study found a positive correlation between milk consumption and health. This one found the exact opposite.

You can't trust everything that you read online.
Read everything within reason.

How to overcome the disadvantage of conflicting health advice for a balanced diet

There are certain health principles that are universally true. Follow these principles:
  1. The closer to nature that the food is, the healthier the food will be.
  2. Processed food almost always contains unhealthy ingredients.
  3. Avoid added sugar.
  4. Eat from a variety of food sources.
If you can follow these key principles, you'd be further on your way to living a healthy lifestyle. Don't change your entire eating plan with every new health trend that comes and goes. Health culture produces more health advice than ever before.

Follow health influences that cite reputable studies to prove their health advice. If I publish a piece on the perfect balanced diet, it should include links to further reading about any health claims that I make.

Consult your doctor or a registered nutritionist whenever you are unsure about a specific piece of health advice.

Good health advisers cite reputable research.
No evidence, no trust

2. The food that you enjoy the most probably doesn't have a place on the balanced diet

If it was easy, everyone would do it. One of the disadvantages of a healthy lifestyle in general is the fact that you don't get to eat all of the foods that you enjoy.

When we eat whatever we want to, we tend to focus on the foods that are the most convenient or tasty and we reject the foods that we don't like so much.

Healthy food doesn't taste so good because it wasn't designed to taste good. Animals and plants are designed for survival - not for how good they taste on your plate.

Processed foods are specifically designed with taste in mind. Good tasting food is rewarded with higher sales. Food that does not taste as good quickly falls off the shelves to be replaced with tastier food.

This means that processed food will taste better and better as time goes on. Every purchase of processed food can be seen as a 'vote' that tells manufacturers to make more of it.

Healthy food isn't addictive because it is wholesome. It builds your body up. Unhealthy food is addictive because it is unhealthy. When your body is truly satisfied, it won't crave more. When it is left with deficiencies, it craves more of something to try and fill that gap.

Healthy food allows your body to care for itself. Unhealthy food removes your body's ability to care for itself and leaves you dependent on other things to sustain it.

These are the reasons why good things don't feel as attractive or desirable as bad things. A balanced diet will contain more good things (which we won't enjoy as much for the reasons above), and less of the bad things (which were made to make us crave more of them).

Addiction makes you crave more of what kills you. Freedom makes you crave more of what heals you.
Choose freedom over captivity.

How to overcome the less pleasurable disadvantage of a balanced diet

A great place to start is to realize that you enjoy junk food because of addiction - not because of actual enjoyment. Artificial sweeteners are more addictive than cocaine. Sugar and sodium trigger dopamine (a pleasure hormone) release in the brain. This makes processed food addictive.

When you trigger dopamine too much (through unhealthy food in this case), your brain adapts by producing less of it naturally. This is known as homeostasis. When your brain produces less dopamine, you crave unhealthy food to get more dopamine.

Like with any addiction, your brain will start to return to normal as soon as you stop the addictive behavior. Isn't it amazing to know that your brain will start making more happy hormones as soon as you stop eating unhealthy food!?

The good news is that you will crave unhealthy food less and less every time that you eat something healthy instead of junk food. A balanced diet therefore will reduce your cravings for unhealthy food over time.

Healthy activities are the best way to overcome addictive behaviors.
Health will make you whole again.

3. There are certain food groups that you won't enjoy on a balanced diet

Similar to the fact that you will need to stop eating some of the foods that you enjoy, you will have to start eating foods that you don't necessarily enjoy.

I eat a balanced diet almost every day. The one food group that I don't enjoy very much is fruit and vegetables. They are extremely good for me, but I don't enjoy eating them. They take long to chew, the taste is a bit bland and it feels more like a chore than a pleasurable activity.

You might not like preparing foods that are good for you. It is much easier to make instant noodles loaded with addictive salt than it is to cook a high protein meal at night.

Some people might not enjoy whole wheat bread over white bread, brown rice over white rice or fruit over candy.

A balanced diet will have you eating foods that you don't like.

Sometimes you have to do the things that you don't enjoy to get the benefits that you do enjoy.
Every action has consequences.

How to overcome the unpleasant disadvantages of a balanced diet

Realize that every action (or food choice) has a cost and a reward. Unhealthy food has the reward of enjoyment, but the cost of health. Healthy food has the reward of health, but the cost of displeasure.

A few minutes of eating a food is worth the cost when I look at the health rewards that I reap from it. We tend to stick to activities when we see the reward - rather than the cost.

You are less likely to stop eating unhealthy food when you look at the cost. Bad health seems so far away and what difference will one meal make? You make unhealthy choices because of the reward - not because of the cost.

In the same way, you are more likely to choose healthy food when you focus on the reward instead of the cost.

The reward of healthy food might seem very far away if you focus on long-term health, so focus on the short-term rewards.

I love the idea, for example, of fostering good gut bacteria. Good gut bacteria need fiber from fruit and vegetables to eliminate bad gut bacteria, make happiness hormones, prevent allergies, turn fat into energy and produce important hormones.

Whenever I eat fruit and vegetables; I focus on the fact that I am giving my good gut bacteria a wholesome meal right here, right now.

Learn about the positive effects of healthy food and focus on the ones that cause you to stick to that action. Maybe you can tell yourself that you will lose a little bit of fat every time that you eat your veggies. Whatever it is, focus on the immediate reward instead of the cost.

We are more likely to stick to healthy decisions when we focus on the short-term rewards.
Focus on what you gain.

4. Not all food in a balanced diet is cheap or readily available

Unhealthy food like processed food or junk food is very cheap. Sugar, sodium and chemicals can be made to massive scales because they are used in almost all processed food.

Cheaper grains and unwanted agricultural by-products can be used in processed food because the flavor is masked with artificial flavors and flavor enhancers.

Have you noticed that we eat protein flavored carbohydrates like beef chips and chicken instant noodles? That's because protein is expensive but desirable. Processed food makes the taste of protein cheap by adding those flavors to simple carbohydrates that are easy to manufacture.

Healthy food is more expensive because you can't mechanically produce a cow or a carrot. You have to wait for them to mature instead of switching on the button of a machine. Time increases cost.

The loss of products along the agricultural and delivery process of fresh produce also increases the cost. A percentage of produce is lost to spoilage at every step of the process from the time it starts growing to the time it is delivered to shops and the time that customers put them into their carts.

Even at the end of the delivery process, food that looks a little spoiled is rejected by customers and stores have to throw them out.

Pesticides, hormones, fertilizers and antibiotics reduce the cost of food spoilage, but decrease the health of the food. There is almost double the amount of beneficial nutrients in organic and free-range food.

That is why healthy food costs more than unhealthy food.

Unhealthy food is also more convenient. You can find unhealthy food and fast food outlets at just about every corner. Some of these outlets are open for business for much longer than wholefood stores - which sell food that you would still need to cook before you can eat them.

High profit margins and customer demand make processed food more available than natural, whole food.

It is easier to eat the wrong food because it is cheap and available almost everywhere.

Set boundaries. You don't need to make a bad choice every time that the option becomes available.
Convenience shouldn't lead to failure.

How to overcome the convenience or price disadvantage of a balanced diet

Plan ahead. You are much less likely to buy that hot dog when you have packed your own lunch.

You can make your balanced diet even more convenient when you do meal prep. Plan your meals one week in advance and make all of the meals in one day. Once you do it for long enough, it will be much easier than when you sort for food whenever you feel hungry.

Buy in bulk. Freeze fresh produce and whatever food you don't use immediately so that nothing goes to waste.

Eat fruit and vegetables according to their season. This makes them cheaper.

80% of success lied in the plan itself.
Plan for success

5. A balanced diet takes time to yield health results

If we died of a preventable disease as soon as we smoked our first cigarette or ate our first kind of junk food, none of us would do it. We would exercise every day if we gained a few pounds of weight as soon as we started slacking off.

Prolonged results diminish our appetite for beneficial behavior.

The fact that it takes an accumulation of effort to see a positive result inspires me to do what I like and start tomorrow instead of today.

Secondly, many of us wonder whether all of that effort is really worth the reward. Is it truly worth getting up and hour earlier to exercise if I have to do it every day for months before I see any noticeable differences?

We're too focused on 'now' to see what is 'good'.
Change your focus.

How to overcome the delayed disadvantage of a balanced diet

There are many benefits to a balanced diet that you can feel right away.

Blood sugar stabilizes as soon as you eat healthy food. You won't feel bloated, drowsy or uncomfortable like when you eat unhealthy food.

I might not enjoy eating fruit and vegetables, but I feel good about the fact that I did it straight afterwards. That good feeling from accomplishing a small goal motivates me to do other things that also make me feel good as soon as I'm done.

Success breeds success. When you make one positive change, you will want to make another one.

Every small but positive decision makes you feel good. Try it.
Health feels good.

My hope is that you are better prepared to stick to healthy decisions in the future because of this article. Preparation is 80% of the battle. Stay Strong!

1. Eat 5 fruit and vegetables for your first meal of the day

You need to eat five fruit and vegetables every day. This will give your body the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fiber, antioxidants and other plant compounds that it needs. The first meal needs to consist of 5 different, raw, whole, unprocessed fruit or vegetables.

5 fruit and vegetables for weight loss

Many people are worried about the sugar and carbohydrates of eating 5 whole fruit and vegetables every day.

Fruit and vegetables cause fat loss. In fact, a trendy fruit-only diet causes to rapid weight loss in a matter of days

I wouldn't recommend this diet because it is low in protein - even though weight is reduced very quickly. The point is that fruit and vegetables cause you to lose fat and nourish your body with important nutrients at the same time.

Why do fruit and vegetables lead to fat loss?

Fruit and vegetables are high in water and fiber. The water content fills you up very quickly without many calories that could be turned into fat.

Your digestive system can't break fiber into usable nutrients. The combination of water and fiber keep your digestive system full for a long period of time before it gets empty and needs more food.

This is why fruit doesn't spike your blood sugar in the same way as the added sugars from processed food like cereal. Fiber prolongs the release of the sugars in fruit and vegetables.

You get a small influx of sugar that lasts for hours. The sugar in processed food is dumped into your system immediately. This leads to the sugar spikes that cause diabetes, weight gain and other health issues.

It is a great idea to full up on fruit and vegetables for you first meal so that you feel more satisfied for the rest of the day. You won't start the day on a sugar-powered roller-coaster of energy.

Why should I eat 5 fruit and vegetables per day?

You should eat at least 5 fruit and vegetables every day - regardless of whether you want to lose weight or not. Here's why:
  1. Fruit and veg prevent cancer, heart disease and mental illnesses
  2. They are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other important nutrients
  3. The fiber in fruit and vegetables feed good gut bacteria that protect the immune system, produce important brain chemicals, regulate nutrients and prevent disease

Why you should eat fruit
5 a day keeps the doctor away.

Which fruit and vegetables should I eat every day?

You can choose any 5 fruit and vegetables according to your budget, product availability, taste preference and season. Just make sure that you eat 5 different kinds every day and that they are fresh (uncooked and unprocessed). Raw fruit and veg are super healthy.

2. Eat a good source of protein for lunch

The first meal should give you almost all of the micro nutrients that you need. There are some nutrients, however, that fruit and vegetables don't usually have.

The second meal focuses on protein (which is also extremely important for your health). Protein-rich foods typically give you better sources of Iron and Vitamin B as well.

Why is protein so important?

Protein makes up every cell in your body. Cells die off and need more protein to regenerate.

Your body can store energy in the form of glycogen (sugar stored in the muscles and the liver) and fat, but it can't store protein.

If you don't eat enough protein regularly, muscle tissue will break down so that the body can fulfill its most vital functions (because protein is much than just a building block).

Muscle wastage from protein deficiency can lead to weakness, low metabolism, weight loss in some and weight gain in others, low energy levels, and faster age-related health decline.

How often do our cells regenerate?

Your entire body regenerates at an average of every 7 to 15 years.

The lining of your stomach and intestines are replaced every 5 days. Your skin regenerates every 2 to 4 weeks. Red blood cells regenerate every 6 months or so. Your liver regenerates every 2 years or less. Bone cells regenerate over 10 years (and the process slows as we age). Parts of the eye and teeth enamel don't regenerate at all. Some parts of the brain regenerate, while others don't.

What other roles does protein play in the body?

Cells aren't the only things that rely on protein for generation. Hormones, enzymes and other chemicals need protein just as much as cells for their formation. Your immune system depends on protein to work properly.

What happens when you don't get enough protein?

Signs of protein deficiency include:

  1. Muscle wasting
  2. Poor wound healing
  3. Recurring infections
  4. Low energy
  5. Pale skin
  6. Brittle hair and nails
  7. Dry, itchy skin
  8. Constant hunger cravings

Sings of protein deficiency
Eat enough protein.

How much protein do you need per day?

You should get 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (or 0.36 grams per pound) every day. That's 56 grams for the average male and 46 grams for the average female.

Dedicate your second meal to protein so that you get enough of this precious nutrient.

Good sources of protein

  1. Eggs
  2. Nuts
  3. Nut butters
  4. Chicken
  5. Oats
  6. Dairy
  7. Beef
  8. Pork
  9. Turkey

3. Have a combination of healthy foods for dinner

The first meal will give your body all of the fiber and most of the micro nutrients (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.) that it needs. The second meals will give you the missing nutrients like protein, iron and vitamin B.

The third meal gives you another important aspect of your daily nutrition requirements: calories. Calories are a measurement of food according to the amount of energy that they contain.

Fruit and vegetables are typically very low in calories because they contain so much water and fiber. Protein should be used for rebuilding your cells and other important bodily functions. You therefore need more calories from food so that you have enough energy.

Many people like to reduce their calories when they go onto a balanced diet. This can lead to disastrous side effects.

Negative effects of calorie restriction

Your body needs calories to produce energy. Without calories, your body won't have the energy that it needs to do many important things.

  1. Infertility
  2. Weaker bones
  3. Slow metabolism
  4. Weight gain
  5. Low energy
  6. Weak immune system
  7. Low concentration or focus
  8. Moodiness
  9. Depression
  10. Lack of motivation
  11. Hunger cravings
  12. Addictive behavior
  13. Hormonal imbalances
  14. Muscle loss
  15. Weakness

Effects of calorie restriction
Don't eat too little.

Will I gain weight if I don't restrict my calories?

Remember that the fruit and vegetables will keep you fuller for longer. The protein from the second meal will have the same effect. You will notice that you have more energy and that you aren't as hungry so often because of these two meals.

If you eat great, your body will look great. You will be at a healthy weight when you are healthy.

There are 7 ways to get healthy (and calorie restriction isn't one of them). Eat right (and avoid unhealthy food), exercise regularly, drink enough water, look after your gut, sleep enough, take care of your mental state and practice good hygiene. None of these healthy habits are negotiable when it comes to your health.

If you do all of these things, you will have more energy because your body can perform all of its functions properly. One of those functions is energy creation through fat metabolism.

Unhealthy food causes weight gain. Added sugar and artificial sweeteners in processed food lead to weight gain.

Eat well. Look good. Feel good.

Unhealthy foods to avoid

You might not restrict your calories, but you shouldn't eat anything that is available. Unhealthy food will hurt your body and lower its energy production as a result. Avoid these foods:
  1. Fast food
  2. Fried food
  3. Pastries
  4. Cereals
  5. Processed meat
  6. Energy drinks
  7. Sugar in coffee and tea
  8. Soda
  9. Condiments like ketchup and mustard

Unhealthy food
Save your health.

Healthy combinations of food

Eat the following healthy food ideas for dinner instead:
  1. Chicken, pumpkin and brown rice
  2. Roast beef with squash and spinach
  3. Steak, corn and sweet potatoes
  4. An omelet with cheese, tomato and ham
  5. Vegetable stir fry with fish
  6. Avocado chicken salad
  7. Peanut butter and whole wheat bread
  8. Yogurt and mixed berries

4. Have healthy snacks between meals when needed

If you still feel hungry in between any of these meals, you can have a healthy snack. You get to choose a food from any of the above three meals.

Do you have left over from last night's dinner? No problem! Just make sure that you don't skip out on any of your three main meals because they are the most important. Don't skip out on your daily fruit and vegetables, for example, because you made too much chicken and sweet potatoes for dinner last night.

If you still want to reduce your calories, aim for green leafy vegetables as snack because they are extremely low in calories.

5. Make water your primary source of hydration

Almost half the western world doesn't drink enough water. Every cell in your body needs water. Blood uses water to transport nutrients or toxins from one part of your body to another.

Symptoms of dehydration:

  1. Darker urine
  2. Slow metabolism
  3. Laziness
  4. Low energy
  5. Sleepiness
  6. Lack of concentration or focus
  7. Moodiness
  8. Depression
  9. Increased water weight
  10. Weak immune system
  11. Heart health decline
  12. Hunger
  13. Cravings for sugar, caffeine, nicotine or alcohol
  14. Headaches
  15. Bad skin
  16. Overall weakness
  17. Constipation and other digestive issues
  18. Poor kidney health (kidney stones, kidney failure)
  19. Erectile dysfunction
  20. Dry eyes and eye strain

List of dehydration symptoms
Drink enough water.

How to stay hydrated

  1. Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go.
  2. Drink a glass of water before you satisfy a craving for sugar, caffeine or nicotine - you will be surprised by how often your body was just thirsty!
  3. Keep a large jug of water on your desk - you will automatically sip on it while you work.
  4. Have a glass of water before your first cup of coffee or tea in the morning.

Additional notes on the balanced diet menu

  1. Don't eat too close to bed time. This can reduce overall sleep quality and cause digestive issues.
  2. Limit junk food as much as you can. Processed food is the number one contributor to obesity and bad health.

Conclusion

A balanced diet will give your body all of the nutrients that it needs. It will also eliminate the foods (like junk food or processed food) that damage your overall health. Any healthy diet is incomplete without a good exercise program. Stay Strong!

What are the side effects of keto pills? Our keto expert finds out!

Plate with different keto pills
I tried keto pills to answer your questions.

What are the side effects of keto pills?

Our keto expert JP Wells tried keto pills to give our readers some answers. He had fewer keto flu symptoms, less brain fog, experienced higher energy levels and lost 15 pounds in the process! He didn't report any negative side effects and recommends that people give them a try. Read his full story now:

The low-down on keto pills: Everything you need to know about exogenous ketones and other keto pills

Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz out there about Keto Pills. These pills are said to provide amazing results for the user and promise almost unbelievable success.

On the other side of the coin, people have also been criticizing these pills. They say that keto pills are not good for your long-term health or fitness success.

During my years of practicing the keto lifestyle, I have usually never taken any supplementation outside of my traditional multi-vitamin and coconut oil.

With the entire social buzz surrounding these supplements, however, I decided to take a closer look - and even give them a try myself in an effort to see what they are all about.

What is the purpose of keto pills?

As we all know by now, the idea behind the keto diet is to train your body to use fat as its primary fuel source, rather than carbohydrates. This is done by taking advantage of a natural metabolic state known as ketosis.

To achieve a ketogenic state (or ketosis), a person must restrict their intake of carbohydrates to roughly 5% of your total daily calories. Doing so will starve your body of its normal fuel source and force it to look for a new source of energy.

It is during this initial period of time while your body is making the switch from carbs to fats that you experience the keto diet's most famous side effect: the Keto Flu.

The primary idea behind most keto pills is to shorten the duration of the 'keto flu' symptoms and get you into a ketogenic state much faster.

The effects of keto pills

Since I’ve been taking my keto pills, I have noticed a definite, positive difference. I got an increase in energy and I have yet to deal with a single muscle cramp since entering into ketosis.

Normally I am used to getting muscle cramps in my hamstrings semi-regularly (as much as a few times a week), depending on my workout routine. I also noticed that my transition period into the 'keto flu' was remarkably short.

I have experienced “keto flu” symptoms for up to 5 days in the past. However, once I began taking the keto pills and cutting my carbs down, I only had a day or so of brain fog.

I have been practicing strict keto for about a week and a half now, and I’m already down 15 lbs.

Final thoughts on keto pills

Obviously I can only speak of my own, limited, personal experience with keto pills. Everyone’s body is completely different (as I have said many times in the past). What works for me and has amazing effects in my life may not be as effective for another person.

I definitely recommend giving keto pills a try to see if it works for you. If you choose to get all of your nutrients from food alone, that’s okay as well.

The important thing to keep in mind is how crucial it is that you do give your body the nutrients it needs to work effectively - and keep it running at peak performance.
